This review may be a little shocking (pun intended).
Today I will be reviewing the new Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! It
is out for the Nintendo Switch, and there are two versions. The first one is
the Pikachu version, and the second one is the Eevee version.
Story:
The game takes you to the Kanto region, where your job is to
get 8 badges, and defeat the Elite 4. Along the way, you need to capture many
new Pokémon, and raise a strong team. By raising a strong team, you can become
the next Pokémon Champion!
The story is very similar to if you played the Old Pokémon
Games, or Pokémon FireRed, and Pokémon LeafGreen. There is the Team Rocket, and
all of the similar locations like the last one. There are some nostalgia
moments, and some cameos, but that’s about it.
The only difference this time is that there is Alolan Forms,
which are from Pokémon Sun and Moon. They are of famous Kanto Pokémon, such as Diglett.
Gameplay:
Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu is an RPG that focuses on a turn-based
battle system. When fighting another trainer, the trainer has their Pokémon
fight against another Pokémon. They take turns until one is knocked out. After one
is knocked out, then another Pokémon from that trainer appears. If there are no
Pokémon left on one side of the field, and there are no remaining Pokémon in
that Trainer’s “Party”, then that person loses the battle.
In order to get those Pokémon, you have to catch them. In the
past, you would have to fight them like a trainer, and you would catch the Pokémon
in the battle. But now there is a WHOLE SEPARATE screen where you can catch Pokémon,
just like in Pokémon Go! The Pokémon can run away, and the berry system is
taken straight from Pokémon Go.
Complaints:
The Pokémon are super hard to capture. They may look like
they are going to be captured, but trust me, they won’t get caught at all. The
game is supposed to have you catch many Pokémon, not just a few.
In addition to this the game does not give you enough EXP to
level up your “Party”, but this is due to the capturing system. I do like the
system and all, but it needs to be easier, not harder.
Overall:
I like the game. I really do. But the capturing system is
painful, and makes it not fun. But it is not the worst thing ever. Hopefully it
will be nicer when I progress forward.
I give this game a 4 out of 5 stars. The capturing prevents this from being really good. But the game is fun.
