Hello Everyone,
Today I will be reviewing Pokemon Quest, for the Nintendo Switch and Mobile Phones/Tablets.
It is a Mobile RPG, and it is FREE on both stores! So go and try it out after this review!
I will review the story, and the gameplay.
The story of Pokemon Quest is that you land on an island, and you try to explore it. Along the way you find totems of various Pokemon, and capture others to fully explore the island.
You get to use Pokemon from the Kanto region. The game gives you a choice of which Pokemon you want to use, and I chose Squirtle.
The story is very light, which makes sense for a Mobile style game. It doesn't do much for me, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Gameplay:
The game itself actually has a lot of gameplay features to it. There are plenty of different ways to get the Pokemon mentioned before.
One way is to get a free "Once a Day" login bonus. A random pokemon will come and join you. The Pokemon that can join you are the basic forms. Not its evolutions.
Another way to get Pokemon is to create a "dish" with different ingredients that you find throughout your journey. After you cook the food, you must play several adventures before you can recruit Pokemon for your journey. It's a nice system, and makes you carefully think about what to do.
Remember those totems I talked about? Well they give special features. If you place them on your island, then you can get several perks, like increased EXP. Some items from the store (which I'll talk about in a minute) come in handy too.
The store is very hit-or-miss. There are plenty of good items to get from the store, but you have to spend a lot of "Poke-Tickets" to get them. Good thing is that you get 50 of them per day, but that can be a lot of grinding for one item. It becomes a hassle, as you have other things that you want to do too.
Another problem with the system is that some of the items in this store cannot be purchased with tickets. They must use real money. That is a bummer too, as the most powerful items are behind the paywall.
Besides paying to win, there are ways to increase your Pokemon's stats too, which is conveniently located in the "Edit Team" section. This shows the 3 Pokemon that you are using throughout the journey, and they can be changed throughout the journey.
Each Pokemon has several equipment that can be used. The game calls them "Power Charms". They give attack or defense buffs to your Pokemon, and can make them a lot stronger. You will need to use these throughout the game.
You can also train your Pokemon, or change the moveset, at the cost of using your other Pokemon as bait. This means that in order to learn moves, you must get rid of your Pokemon. This is not a great thing because the moves have a certain % chance of actually working., From my experience I usually failed too, and I lost many Pokemon this way. I do not like it at all, and it should have been changed, or at least to use "Poke-Tickets".
Overall the game is a lot of fun, but a lot of the mobile game structure dampens it.
As a result of this, I give the game a 3 out of 5.
