The Gears still Turn! A Gears 5 Review!

Hello everyone,

Today I will be reviewing Gears 5, the fifth installment (sixth but we don't talk about Gears of War: Judgment) in the Gears of War series.

It is made by The Coalition, and published my Microsoft Studios. The game is for the Xbox One, and PC.

The game is part of the Xbox Game Pass, which is how I got to play it on the PC.

Time to dive into the story:

Story:

You play as a Gear, a soldier on the planet of Sera who has to fight against a variety of enemies from the Swarm Faction, a bunch of monstrous humanoids who want to destroy humanity.

You specifically play as JD Fenix, Kait Diaz, Del, or Dave the Robot. These people are the main protagonists of the story.

The story is about Kait trying to figure out who she really is. It brings in interesting mechanics and storytelling elements that you have to dig for. I ended up liking it a lot.

The story is ok, but you really need to have played Gears of War 4 in order to understand how it all works. Otherwise you will have been lost.

It is strongly recommended that you play the other Gears of War games as well, but Gears of War 4 will bring you into the fold as well.

Gameplay:

The game is a Third-Person Cover Shooter. There is no jumping, and that actually is for the better. Gears 5 is a lot more tactical than other games, and being willy nilly will get you killed easily.

There are plenty of guns, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The Gnasher (which is the fan favorite) is a shotgun that you don't need to aim to use. The Lancer is a gun with a chainsaw attached which dismembers your enemies. It is not always good to use the chainsaw in PVP (Player Versus Player), but it is good in other modes such as Horde or Escape.

The game features an active reload, where if you press the reload button when the icon is in the white bar (on the reload of the gun), then you get a Perfect Reload, which reloads the gun and gives you more damage for your bullets. It is a well designed system, and it makes the game a lot more enjoyable.

There are three modes besides the campaign (story): Horde, Escape, and PVP.

I played PVP for a little bit, and it is fun. If you are a fan of the previous games, then you will enjoy the game. It's very similar to the old games, minus new gameplay enhancements, such as melee attacks, or attacking enemies through the cover. I liked the new changes, and the PVP is still strong.

Escape is interesting. You have to escape a pre-generated maze within a certain time, while fighting enemies. In addition, you get to play with up to 2 other people, who get to choose from a class of characters.

I played as a character named Keegan. He had an ability to give ammo, which I loved. That was a very nice thing to have honestly.

Horde mode is the same as it was in Gears of War 4. The only difference is that there are characters with special abilities. That's about it for Horde.

Overall I love the game. I will keep on playing it and you should too!

I give it a 5 out of 5.

  1. I like how you put so much detail in describing the game for us that do not know what it is about. I like the story part but I found it interesting when you said that you needed to play Gears of War 4 in order to understand Gears 5. I find this as a turn off because if I just bought Gears 5 than I would be lost in the game and I would hate this. I liked how you described the guns in the game, as well as the three modes other than campaign (story). Nice to see you gave a game you like a 5/5. Enjoy your game!
