Hello Everyone,
Today I am writing a review on the old hit game, Enter the Gungeon. It is a top down rogue-like Shooter from Devolver Digital, and it was released for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
As a word of caution, some of the pictures from the game have guns in them. This is because the main theme of the game is about guns. Even the enemies are designed that way.
(Also Note: I got the game for free as part of the Epic Games Store. It will cost money as of this writing.)
Lets begin:
Story:
There is a massive dungeon called "The Gungeon", which allows a person to obtain the "Gun That Can Kill the Past". As a consequence, you can play initially from one of 4 characters, each with special abilities and traits. Each of them are different, and the playstyles to each are unique, but with some overlap.
Each character's past gets revealed once you beat the final boss of the game. As I am reviewing the game, I will not spoil the story besides this introduction.
The characters that I liked the most are the Pilot, and the Hunter. Both characters had unique abilities that I liked, and as a consequence, I beat the game several times with each of them.
One problem I have with the game is that there is not much lore. For me that doesn't really matter, but for some people that is the end of the world. The game focuses more on the gameplay.
There is some cool aesthetic though. For example, your health is shown (below) in bullets. That in itself is amazing. The game has a lot of references too, such as a Mario reference, and even a Zelda reference too (it's very tongue-in-cheek). The game is perfect for video game nerds such as myself.
On to the Gameplay:
The Gungeon focuses on replayability in the sense that you get restarted if you die. As a consequence, you should play multiple times, or "runs" as called in a Rogue-like game. I have been on dozens of runs at this point.
The game is top down, and there are many different weapons to use that make the game even more fun. The controls are super smooth as well. On PC, you click the right mouse button and you roll. That alone saves one from many deaths (shown) and prevents you from taking damage as well.
There are several different weapons and items, but you can only hold so many items before you have to drop them. You can hold as many weapons as possible (to my knowledge, I haven't had to get rid of any weapons in my playthroughs).
The bosses that you fight against are very fun against. Some of them are very difficult to defeat though, while others are pretty easy, such as the Gatling Gull (shown below). The bosses are randomized, and sometimes that does lead to difficulty spikes in the gameplay.
Another problem that I have is the weapon choices. There are several different chest variations (below), and the problem I have is the randomization of it. Sometimes you get overpowered weapons, and sometimes you get items that don't do anything at all. That is an arbitrary difficulty spike. There are some ways to fix it, but you have to beat the game first.
Overall:
The game is a lot of fun, and I truly enjoyed it. I played a lot of the game, and I keep coming back to it, even after I beat the game.
I give the rating a 4 out of 5. It would be a 5 out of 5 if it wasn't for the difficulty spike.
